"While at Kwelena Step Up Step Down, I had the privilege of working with Kat, a Peer Comorbidity Worker who provides lived experience support in conjunction with Palmerston WA. Her focus on alcohol and other drug (AOD) recovery and her facilitation of S.M.A.R.T. groups added a unique and incredibly valuable dimension to the support I received during my stay. From our first interaction, Kat created a space where I felt genuinely heard, respected, and understood. One significant moment that stands out occurred early in my stay when I experienced a high level of distress and a strong urge to discharge and return home to use. I was able to draw on pre-existing skills such as distancing and urge tolerance to move through the moment. Within ten minutes, Kat was at my door to check-in. Her presence, along with her energetic and sincere encouragement as we reviewed the skills I’d used had a profound effect. That validation helped solidify my confidence and made the rest of my time at Kwelena far more manageable. Kat’s Friday S.M.A.R.T. groups, especially the focus on small, achievable goal-setting, continue to have a lasting impact and are strategies I plan to carry with me well beyond discharge. She also provided practical and relevant resources around recovery and relapse prevention, which I found incredibly useful. Although not every client may have the words or insight to express it, I want to reassure Kat that her impact on residents is more powerful than she may ever truly know. Her ability to connect through lived experience made a significant difference in my recovery, particularly with my struggles around AOD. To the service as a whole: while I am deeply grateful to all the staff who supported me throughout my journey, I want to highlight that Kat’s peer support fills a unique and essential role. Her contribution was not only valuable—it was priceless."

Initially referred with PTSD and anxiety, struggling with low self-esteem and easily frustrated with lack of properly placed boundaries and lacking coping skills. He struggled with his case worker in initial sessions due to these barriers and continued anxious symptoms, preventing him from accessing treatment options like Centrelink, GP or other services. As such, he was introduced to Connect Wanju’s peer worker to reduce his anxiety of services, familiarise himself to the services and support available to him and build a stronger client relationship.

We also provide safe disposal bins, and most equipment is free of charge.
- [Prevention](https://www.palmerston.org.au/services/prevention/): The Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention Coordinator program is funded by the Mental Health Commission and works with the Commission to deliver on the priorities of the WA Mental Health Promotion, Mental Illness and Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention Plan 2018-2025.This program aims to prevent the uptake of drug and alcohol use and delay the age at which use begins. We work with the community to raise awareness and address the risk and protective factors related to AOD use. Using a harm minimisation approach, the program focuses on increasing awareness and supporting evidence-informed prevention and intervention activities to create long-term change across the population’s lifespan.
- [Peer Support](https://www.palmerston.org.au/services/peer-support/): Many peers have experience either supporting loved ones through substance use challenges or navigating their own journey with alcohol, other drugs, or mental health. Palmerston employs peers at many of our sites.Our peer led groups offer a safe space to connect, share insights, and learn from one another. They are free and everyone is welcome.Palmerston supports people with mental health and alcohol and other drug concerns through a variety of partnerships and local agreements.
- [Residential Rehab](https://www.palmerston.org.au/services/residential-rehab/): Both residential rehabs operate as therapeutic communities (TC), which means the program is designed around a community-based approach. These settings provide a calm, supportive environment where you can participate in a structured program. Residents work together as a community, supporting their own recovery and each other’s.
- [Groups](https://www.palmerston.org.au/services/groups/): Some groups are delivered by peer support workers (SMART, On Track) while others (AOD/Mental Health) are educational and will be delivered by counsellors.
- [Support for Family & Friends](https://www.palmerston.org.au/for-you/support-for-family-friends/): Family counselling involves friends and family members meeting together with a counsellor to discuss the difficulties faced by the family in relation to alcohol and other drug use and how to support their loved one’s recovery. All friends and family members are encouraged and welcome to attend family counselling.
