Services for Youth:
Evidence based best practice
As part of evidence based best practice, Palmerston seeks feedback from our young clients. This data has helped inform our ongoing service delivery approaches with young people.
Partnership with headspace
Palmerston partners with headspace across several metro locations and the Great Southern region. Young clients (under 18) are assessed by the headspace triage and intake team and, when AOD (alcohol and other drugs) support is needed, they are referred to our specialist youth counselling staff, who are co-located within headspace.

Kedala Mia Dayhab
Kedala Mia Dayhab is a new 10-week youth program in the Bindjareb Region. Starting July 21st, Kedala Mia (meaning dayhouse in Noongar) will provide culturally secure support for young people aged 10–17 navigating challenges with substance use and offending behaviours. Delivered at Winjan Aboriginal Corporation in Mandurah, the program focuses on building confidence, connection, and practical life skills — all within a safe, community-based setting.
Participants return home each evening, with nominations accepted from Police, Youth Justice, Courts, self-referrals, and local networks. If you know a young person who could benefit, please get in touch or share with your networks. Nominations can be submitted via palmerston.org.au or sent to KedalaMia@palmerston.org.au
Partnership with Oseca Health (formerly GP down south)
We partner with Oseca Health to support young people (12-25) with alcohol and drug concerns. Our flexible youth counselling services are available at the Peel Health Hub for individuals seeking help for themselves or a loved one.
Youth Outreach
Our counsellor also provides support in local schools and community services, including Coodanup College, John Tonkin College, and Nidjalla Waangan Mia, ensuring young people can access help in familiar settings.
Referrals
Referrals come from school staff, care coordinators, medical professionals, and local health services. Aboriginal clients can access specialised support at Nidjalla Waangan Mia or the Peel Health Hub.
Providing counselling in schools improves engagement, making it easier for young people to access support when they need it.
